Fifty years ago, seconds after midnight on 14-15 August 1947, the Union Jack, emblazoned with the Star of India, began its final journey down the flagstaff of Viceroy's House, New Delhi. One fifth of humanity claimed their independence from the greatest empire history has ever seen. But 400 million people were to find that the price of freedom was partition and war, riot and murder. In this new edition of their superb reconstruction of events at the time, Collins and Lapierre recount the eclipse of the fabled British Raj and examine the roles enacted by, among others, Mahatma Gandhi, Lord Mountbatten, Nehru and Jinnah in its violent transformation into the new India and Pakistan.

I was required to read this book in high school world history. I have since read it several more times and hope one day to visit Pakistan and India. It is a true story most Westerns do not know anything about. Awesome and brilliantly written.
We are going to India in 2 weeks, and the book was an history lesson of India. Very well written and very interesting.
And somewhat repetitive. I'll keep this short: its a fascinating historical story and is worth telling and worth reading. But it's simply too long of a book. I'm well aware that India is a very populous country.no need to hammer it into my head continuously. Otherwise I found myself interested but had a hard time getting through it by the end.
The book is an excellent introduction to the partition of India. It appears biased, as Lord Mountbatten is a primary source, and receives little criticism. The book is easy to read, and has many brief personal stories to provide a sense of what the events were like for those participating (suffering) in the events. I did not give it five stars because I felt that there was not enough critical review of the actions by both British and India leaders that lead to horrible suffering by hundreds of thousands of people.
Excellent book about the events that led up to India's independence. Terrific and informative read for anyone eager to know about the history of a magnificent nation.
